Piss Ant Town in the Red

August 6th 2009 09:17
So Adelaide United are now under the reins of the FFA despite being one of the most successful club's in the A - League's short history. Who could forget they're freaked out performance in the Asian Champions League of 2008. All the way to the final only to be nonchalantly dispatched by Gamba Osaka. The Wellington Phoenix have no reason to even be mentioned in the same breath as Adelaide United other than the fact they play in the same league. Anyways it's my job to preview the two teams hopes for the season ahead though so we'll give the Kiwi outfit their day in the sun.

The Wellington Phoenix have gone out and purchased Diego and in addition to that strikers Paul Ifill and Chris Greenacre. The pair both from lower league clubs in England. Young Costa Barbarouses should see some more game time and from last year's highlights reel the kid showed some promising signs.

The Phoenix midfield doesn't look too bad either with All Whites captain and workaholic type Tim Brown in the centre, accompanied by Diego and Daniel the Brazilian triple threat minus one. Adding to that the Phoenix also have another toiling 'I'm not scared to take a shot' type in Troy Hearfield. I've got a lot of time for Heary to add to the already brimming with talent midfield, throw in Leo Bertos. He'll catch your eye on many an occasion this season only to lose the ball on entry to the box. Still good to watch though.

Come to think of it the Phoenix defence isn't too bad either Jon Mckain the Socceroo duly assisted by Kiwi international Ben Sigmund and Andrew Durante. Lets not forget that Durante captained Newcastle Jets to glory two seasons back Sigmund is a heart warming story isn't he? Disappearing into international football's wilderness only to emerge again on the back of his work with the Wellington Phoenix. Poor Ben had sunken to an all time low by playing club football in New Zealand fortunately Ricki Herbert plucked Benny Sig from the depths of obscurity and his career is back on track. Chuck in Lochhead another international and you have a decent defence, just don't pick up any injuries boys.

Adelaide United are looking to shore up their defensive stocks by recruiting Mark Rudan. Is this enough? They already have tall timber types in Fyfe and Cornthwaite, I can see these guys getting caught out against some agile characters such as, Thompson, Porter, Bertos, Danning or Brockie. Danger Adelaide. Red alert!

Their midfield stacks up okay if you focus on the flanks. Dodd, Pantelis and young Barbiero but the cool passing creative role lies with Paul Reid. Is this enough? Up front the Reds have Christiano and new guy Lloyd Owusu. Unfortunately Owusu has been struck down with a nasty dose of swine flu. Despite the end of the world histrionics of some, this pig of a germ will not take the lives of a third of the world's population and Lloyd will be back in action before you can say 'something really clever'.

Overall I think this is the season that Adelaide probably slip a little however, they still have the Asian Champions League to focus on at season's end. Hopefully by then they have a defender that won't be stood up by all those nippy Japanese and Korean attackers.
