Melbourne Cup-Date
November 4th 2006 12:36
The barrier draw for the Cup is complete and all is set for the crowning of a new staying champ on Tuesday. For the last three years we've seen Makybe Diva dominate the great two mile event, this time however, things are different. 'The mare' is no more, and Australia awaits for a new champ to stand and deliver.
Listed below are the runners in order of barrier:
Ice Chariot (1), Railings (2), Maybe Better (3), Yeats (4), Kerry O'Reilly (5), Land n' Stars (6), Mahtoum (7), Efficient (8), Tawqeet (9), Geordieland (10), Delta Blues (11), Pop Rock (12), Art Success (13), Mandela (14), On A Jeune (15), Zabeat (16), Short Pause (17), Dolphin Jo (18), Headturner (19), Zipping (20), Dizelle (21), Activation (22), Demerger (23), Glistening (24)
You can make of this what you like but by the time the field get half way round the first bend you can safely write off those unfortunates who are still travelling three wide. The connections of the imports will tell us all about how their horses like a clear passage and I'm not disagreeing with them but the reality of the Melbourne Cup is you just can't go and sit three and four wide and expect to be in the money.
Moving on to the punting side of things, I'll take this opportunity to reveal some facts and figures from the last few Melbourne Cups. The 'hidden gem' of the first Tuesday in November is the massive payout on offer for those who pick the 'first four'. The figures below are the amounts invested on the NSW TAB alone in 2005.
WIN 19,207,717 PLACE 11,902,683
QUINELLA 2,044,900 TRIFECTA 19,130,587
FIRST FOUR 3,222,352
The 'first four' dividend is lucrative though. In 2003 the first four paid $105,243 . In 2004 it was $39,221 while 2005 saw a $73,900 dividend. None of these races were won by outsiders either. Makybe Diva the winner on all three occasions was favourite, in '04, '05 and third fave in '03. However, the big blowout is usually caused by a minor place getter who sneaks under the radar of the experienced punters. Some of those freak runs in recent years have been supplied by She's Archie, Mr Prudent, On A Jeune and Zazzman.
In the two days preceeding the Cup I'll show you how to find the horses who have so far flown below the radar, so you can put them in your first four and share in the tens of thousands of dollars on offer.

Pick the exact finishing order past the post of the Cup and it's yours. The likelihood...well the next sentence will tell you just how likely it isn't. Apparently closest to wins $40thou.

The winner however, probably picked this by throwing a dart at a board with the names of all the runners, or they might have used the TAB's 'mystery bet' option. The mystery bet is simply one in which a computer randomly selects the horses you cheer for.
