Fiendish Ploy a Lesson to All
November 2nd 2006 12:04
Lets hope the events surrounding Nathan Fien's dismissal from the New Zealand national side serves as a deterrent to other would-be traitors.
We can now be assured of Fien carrying a notoriety with him for the rest of his career. And I'm pretty confident the Mt Isa born Queenslander wont be getting any chances of throwing on a green and gold jersey either.
The subject of players nationalities has been a festering wound which has grown out of control in the past decade. In case you don't know the details the Nathan Fien story is as follows: frustrated after falling out of favour with Queensland State of Origin selectors, Nathan decides his best option is to claim Kiwi lineage. Fien cites a New Zealand born grandmother which legally allows him the opportunity to represent the Kiwis. However, after conducting their own investigation the NRL finds that it was a great grandmother who had the misfortune of being born in the 'shaky isles'.
Fien isn't the first to be guilty of such shennanigans, and Australia isn't innocent on this account. Tonie Carroll went from Queensland Origin player to Kiwi international and then Aussie international. Along with that there was Papua New Guinean Adrian Lam who beefed up a classless Maroons outfit in the 90's. Place on top of that the Cayless brothers who played for Parramatta junior sides, and the Karmichael Hunt incident, now you have a situation thats beyond farce.
No matter how desperate the individual or the nation there must be some hard and fast rules in place. We could always take the lead of the IOC (International Olympic Committee), who require an individual to be a citizen of their proposed nation.

Tszyu should have been required to be a resident for a reasonable period ie; 2-3 years.
In the case of Big Red (Phar Lap) however, the horse was shipped over as a yearling and learned his trade in Australia. Sorry can't support your gripe their.
