Fiendish Ploy a Lesson to All

November 2nd 2006 12:04
Lets hope the events surrounding Nathan Fien's dismissal from the New Zealand national side serves as a deterrent to other would-be traitors.

We can now be assured of Fien carrying a notoriety with him for the rest of his career. And I'm pretty confident the Mt Isa born Queenslander wont be getting any chances of throwing on a green and gold jersey either.

The subject of players nationalities has been a festering wound which has grown out of control in the past decade. In case you don't know the details the Nathan Fien story is as follows: frustrated after falling out of favour with Queensland State of Origin selectors, Nathan decides his best option is to claim Kiwi lineage. Fien cites a New Zealand born grandmother which legally allows him the opportunity to represent the Kiwis. However, after conducting their own investigation the NRL finds that it was a great grandmother who had the misfortune of being born in the 'shaky isles'.

Fien isn't the first to be guilty of such shennanigans, and Australia isn't innocent on this account. Tonie Carroll went from Queensland Origin player to Kiwi international and then Aussie international. Along with that there was Papua New Guinean Adrian Lam who beefed up a classless Maroons outfit in the 90's. Place on top of that the Cayless brothers who played for Parramatta junior sides, and the Karmichael Hunt incident, now you have a situation thats beyond farce.

No matter how desperate the individual or the nation there must be some hard and fast rules in place. We could always take the lead of the IOC (International Olympic Committee), who require an individual to be a citizen of their proposed nation.

Where does the real issue in loyalty lie or is it the old quote a "law for the rich and a law for the poor" the fact that the Australian rugby league bubble has burst as much to say that your world domanence has come to an end you no longer have the forward impact nor the inforcers of past eras Shane Webke's retirement is the end of Australian domance thou lets not forget past enforcers that Australia so desperetly sort the services of Australian and queensland origin representitive Toni Carroll unless im not mistaken he also represented his nation of birth when it no longer suited the Australian selectors the Thorne brothers both in league and in union how much does money talk when it comes to Karlmicheal Hunt you have also dipped your finger in the Sonny Bill pie if memory serves correct (thanks for your loyalty Sonny) Lets now step away from league for a moment Kostya Tsyu
was granted Australian Citizenship after only 6 months of residence due to the extraordinary circumstances of him fighting for a world title only to become Australias Russian born superstar ill end on a positive note thought bring on the Rugby league world cup when the kiwis will be led on to the field by the Zimbabwean born Steven Price. lets hope this coming tuesdays Melbourne cup can be won by another great kiwi horse such as the ledgendary PHAR LAP.

Unfortunately the issue of citizenship and nationality is a problem which stretches across all sports, and Kostya Tszyu is a prime example of what can sometimes be an embarrassing problem.
Tszyu should have been required to be a resident for a reasonable period ie; 2-3 years.
In the case of Big Red (Phar Lap) however, the horse was shipped over as a yearling and learned his trade in Australia. Sorry can't support your gripe their.
