A - League's Most Boring
August 28th 2009 09:10
Zzzzzzz. I'm stocking up with caffeine in triple doses to prepare for Saturday's clash between the Queensland Roar and Central Coast Mariners. No two teams can put me to sleep quicker than the mighty Roar and the Mariners. Not even their shiny little orange and yellow uniforms respectively can arouse me.
As an avid fan of the A - League I feel an obligation to watch every game of the league and absorb as much as possible. However, there is no greater challenge than staying awake for the entirety of a Roar or a Mariners match. On the positive side at least the two figure in the one match and they can't apply the bore-rakes to two A- League matches this weekend.
I know I'm going against the grain here by saying Queensland play a negative, dour, sleep inducing brand of mind numbingly krud football. Most of the so called pundits are singing their praises but I've seen too many of the Roar's away games to rate them as entertaining. It's sad when the major high points are when your team hacks the life out of their Kiwi opponents. If it's not serial hacker Tiatto it's up and coming petulent one Kruse or Tommy Oar. Why were there only seven thousand at last week's game? Because most Queenslanders wanted to stay home and watch the game so they could save on sleeping pills.
Funny ha . . . well Central Coast aren't. How can a team with players the like of Ahmed Elrich, Adrian Caceres, Dean Heffernan, Pedj Bojic, little Michael McGlinchey, Matt Simon and Dylan Mcallister bore so many soccer fans? Take away midfield maestro Mile Jedinak and that's how. Big Mile is proving to be the irreplacable object. They've tried Shane Huke and now they've got young McGlinchey in the middle of the park. Unfortunately no one has the same presence, composure and mettle as Mile.
Since moving on to club football in Turkey Mile has acquired himself a regular place in Socceroos squads and started in the Aussie trouncing of Ireland recently. So what can Lawrie do? The Foxsports FC program this week tried to display some stats which depicted Sydney as more of a 'long ball' team than the Mariners but I know who I'd rather watch. The Mariners will drive their own fans away unless they perfect the long ball to a point where it gets them repeated results.
This week's special for the gamblers is Gold Coast away to Newcastle. They're currently showing $1.85 and I actually think that's value for a team that is a class above. Good luck and always remember to attend to your garden.
