A - League's Most Boring

August 28th 2009 09:10
Zzzzzzz. I'm stocking up with caffeine in triple doses to prepare for Saturday's clash between the Queensland Roar and Central Coast Mariners. No two teams can put me to sleep quicker than the mighty Roar and the Mariners. Not even their shiny little orange and yellow uniforms respectively can arouse me.

As an avid fan of the A - League I feel an obligation to watch every game of the league and absorb as much as possible. However, there is no greater challenge than staying awake for the entirety of a Roar or a Mariners match. On the positive side at least the two figure in the one match and they can't apply the bore-rakes to two A- League matches this weekend.

I know I'm going against the grain here by saying Queensland play a negative, dour, sleep inducing brand of mind numbingly krud football. Most of the so called pundits are singing their praises but I've seen too many of the Roar's away games to rate them as entertaining. It's sad when the major high points are when your team hacks the life out of their Kiwi opponents. If it's not serial hacker Tiatto it's up and coming petulent one Kruse or Tommy Oar. Why were there only seven thousand at last week's game? Because most Queenslanders wanted to stay home and watch the game so they could save on sleeping pills.

Funny ha . . . well Central Coast aren't. How can a team with players the like of Ahmed Elrich, Adrian Caceres, Dean Heffernan, Pedj Bojic, little Michael McGlinchey, Matt Simon and Dylan Mcallister bore so many soccer fans? Take away midfield maestro Mile Jedinak and that's how. Big Mile is proving to be the irreplacable object. They've tried Shane Huke and now they've got young McGlinchey in the middle of the park. Unfortunately no one has the same presence, composure and mettle as Mile.

Since moving on to club football in Turkey Mile has acquired himself a regular place in Socceroos squads and started in the Aussie trouncing of Ireland recently. So what can Lawrie do? The Foxsports FC program this week tried to display some stats which depicted Sydney as more of a 'long ball' team than the Mariners but I know who I'd rather watch. The Mariners will drive their own fans away unless they perfect the long ball to a point where it gets them repeated results.

This week's special for the gamblers is Gold Coast away to Newcastle. They're currently showing $1.85 and I actually think that's value for a team that is a class above. Good luck and always remember to attend to your garden.

Sweet Smeltz of Success

August 21st 2009 09:46
As predicted by big mouth manager Miron Bleiberg the Gold Coast are cruising through the A - League. After two matches it's the Sunny Boys who have everyone scared. Even ecclectic Aurelio Vidmar (famous for the phrase Pissant Town) has said this week that if Gold Coast United don't take the A - League title they will have underachieved.

Last week's drubbing of Robbie God's North Queensland Fury 5-nil has put the freak into all and sundry. Prior to the season kicking off all the so called experts had questions about the Gold Coast, particularly their defence. Well, well, well the Sunny Boys quipped though with Michael Thwaite showing he still has what it takes and A - League newcomer Van Den Brink settling in perfick.

In previewing this week's clash of the titans at what will be a packed Hindmarsh Stadium I ask you to browse over a few basic stats. Gold Coast have scored eight and conceded one goal. Adelaide have scored one and conceded one. This week the Reds will be minus midfield pass - omatic passer Paul Reid and with that I just don't see them creating many chances. Gold Coast have them all over the park and mighty mouth Miron will be singing the praises of his all star line up once again, all the while smiling inwardly at his own magnificent recruiting abilities.

Gold Coast United look lke the greatest team to bless the A - League with it's presence. The only thing missing is the sellout crowds. I know that deep down most Queenslanders are pretty simple and soccer can sometimes require the ability to concentrate longer than five minutes on the trot, but c'mon. The only valid excuse for the paltry 7526 crowd was that the rugby league season is in full swing and the Gold Coast Titans are enjoying their most successful season.

Last week I slipped up when Brisbane Roar slipped up. The Roar snatched a draw from the jaws of victory after they led 3-1 against Melbourne. The match is being touted as one of the A - League's greatest matches, but neither coach was too impressed especially Melbourne's laugh a minute man Ernie Merrick. On the positive side Merrick's men have recruited former Melbourne Victory defender Adrian Leijer. The youngster has had a less than productive time at Fulham and the move had the opposite affect on his career to that which was desired. It will be good to see him back and it will probably prevent the Victory from finishing at the bottom of the table.

This week's special is Gold Coast United away from home tonight and I have seen them quoted as $2.65 outsiders at tabsportsbet. I'm sure that some sound investment advice for the next six months would be to throw money at Gold Coast United on a weekly basis. Good luck and don't forget to attend to your gardens over the weekend.

Muscat Done Like a Dogs Dinner

August 13th 2009 14:07
Unfortunately for Melbourne Victory fans their worst fears have been realised in round one of the A - League. Kevin Muscat is down and out after busting his hamstring up really really bad. As a bloke that has suffered a hamstring tear I'll tell ya this, Muscat will be on shaky ground for more than the estimated four weeks on the sidelines he has been sentenced to. The old hammy is something that has the sufferer running around with little inklings of doubt in his mind. Muscat's age will not work in his favour either.

Melbourne & Muscat Down & Out
The Victory face Brissy Roar this Saturday and I'm sure Farina will find a place for Scottish mastermind Charlie Miller in his starting eleven for the Roar this week. This is the spark that is going to create havoc for Melbourne. Last week as predicted right here Central Coast were able to travel to Melbourne and come home with the three points. Guess who is tipping the same thing this week? Yeah I are.

The Central Coast had a plan to shut down Costa Rican lethargist Carlos Hernandez. They succeeded in their planned mission and Melbourne looked really really krud. Only Evan Berger lit up the stage occasionally with some trail blazing runs down the flank. The young New South Welshman from Picton in Sydney's western outskirts has been a real find for Merrick and Melbourne but he will be nullified this week by Brisbane's workaholic midfield. Once again we will see Allsop and Thompson starved of opportunities due to a blockage in midfield.

With the missing Muscat and the midfield shutdown apparent I'm making Brisbane this week's special despite the fact Sergio Van Dijk looks like he is going to give us a repeat of his frustrating efforts early last season, when he missed goals that little girls with all the girl germs could score. None of that matters because if Sergio don't finally slot one away I'm sure Charlie Miller will pick one up and Brisbane will be miserly in defence.

Anyhow folkes have a safe weekend and don't forget to weed your garden.

Crunch Time

August 6th 2009 10:02
I promised I would tell you the finishing order of the A - League after the 27 rounds and strap yourself in because here comes the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Lets not forget that this season we have a final six so that makes predicting the Grand Final winner even harder and with a full season of injuries and transfers ahead of us, I'm not even going to attempt that yet.

So without any further ado I'll start singing like a canary

Piss Ant Town in the Red

August 6th 2009 09:17
So Adelaide United are now under the reins of the FFA despite being one of the most successful club's in the A - League's short history. Who could forget they're freaked out performance in the Asian Champions League of 2008. All the way to the final only to be nonchalantly dispatched by Gamba Osaka. The Wellington Phoenix have no reason to even be mentioned in the same breath as Adelaide United other than the fact they play in the same league. Anyways it's my job to preview the two teams hopes for the season ahead though so we'll give the Kiwi outfit their day in the sun.

The Wellington Phoenix have gone out and purchased Diego and in addition to that strikers Paul Ifill and Chris Greenacre. The pair both from lower league clubs in England. Young Costa Barbarouses should see some more game time and from last year's highlights reel the kid showed some promising signs

Furious Anger

August 4th 2009 09:35
New boys North Queensland Fury will sport a scrumptuous two tone green strip with a splash of white. Some have said 'puke' in response to it's unveiling but I find the strip rather attractive. Green and white look so good together. Does soccer and North Queensland go together? You bet it does. The Fury are looking to appeal to and get all warm and fuzzy with the local community . . . make themselves accessible like, yeah. Much like the Central Coast Mariners have done in sunny Gosford. Today we focus our attention on both these clubs and their preparations for A - League 09/10.

The Fury have Fowler. Known as 'Robbie God' to some. Fowler brings crowds, Fowler brings interest, Fowler brings goals. With the likes of Jason Spagnuolo, Ufuk Talay and young Rostyn Griffiths in the centre of the park, the Fury will definitely have a midfield presence. Okay at the back you've got Scott Wilson as the only guy who has established himself at a high level. But you can never deny bitterness as a motivator. The Fury have picked up Karl Dodd and Jacob Timpano who will relish this opportunity to prove their doubters wrong
