Brisbane Hopes Raw at Best

July 31st 2009 08:20
Melbourne Victory were the first A - League side to hold the trophy aloft twice. The experts are telling us that they are a really really massive chance of doing it for a third time. Today we focus our attention on the Victory's chances and those of the Brisbane Roar. The Roar are currently quoted as second favourite in TAB betting markets.

I've got to admit I'm scratching my head as to why the Roar are held in such high regard. The Roar will get off to a really bogus start when they are flattened by a revved up Gold Coast who have more guns than a flotilla of American battleships. One week later they meet Melbourne Victory away from home. Another defeat. I can't see this lot doing too much. With the dour Farina in charge I'm sure we've seen them reach their peak in the 08/09 season when they finished third.

Lets take a look at the Roar. At the back you have Craig Moore and Danny Tiatto the ageing warriors. Moore has defied the odds to last this long after playing two seasons with the Roar already. The 2010 World Cup is acting as a lure for the ex Rangers and Newcastle United stopper. Unfortunately this doesn't mean he will suddenly regain the pace that he has already lost. I love 'Moorey' and all he did for Australian soccer but we will probably be saying to ourselves on more than one occasion this season . . . "Oh no Craig! Why oh why Craig"

Brisbane Roar

In the midfield the Roar profitted off another old stager last season. Charlie Miller was a revelation. But guess what? He's another year older and what are the Roar going to do when he gets injured this season. Murdocca (who will be missing for the first two months) and Mackay aren't exactly the creative types. Where will the goals come from? I hope the Queenslanders don't expect Sergio Van Dijk to go on another scoring spree in A - League version 5. Sorry guys you seem a little raw to me.

The Melbourne Victory have a lot on their plate this season. Manager Ernie Merrick will be doing his best to pick up a third A - League title but the dangling carrot of the Asian Champions League which kicks off during the latter stages of the A - League will also take up a lot of space inside Ernie's thought processor. The other tiny little issue for the Victory to juggle is that of the upcoming birth of the second Melbourne A - league franchise. This year the Victory has to do everything in it's means and then some to ensure it maintains it's slice of the Melbourne football market.

Looking at the playing roster not much has changed. This is of slight concern. Sometimes after taking a title teams can go missing and lose the desire required to pull off a double. Without fresh new personnel Melbourne might fall victim to this interesting phenomonem. And after looking at their midfield roster I see that the source of creativity is Carlos Hernandez. Hernandez has signed a three year deal with Victory and when he comes to the realisation he is at best a bit part player in the Costa Rican World Cup side I can see this fellas form going south. So far south you'll probably find him floating around somewhere in Bass Strait midway through the season. Never the less I'm sure Victory are set to get off to a decent start in version 5 of the A - League.

The first two rounds will see them go past Central Coast Mariners and Brisbane. After that there will be a tough road trip to North Queensland. Their next opponents Perth will make a slow start to the season and Victory will probably still be on the march. In all Melbourne are set to look fine and dandy up until round seven when they face Adelaide. A week later it's the Sunny Boys of Gold Coast United. The month of October will see the Victory plunge back to reality.

The transfer window in January will be Melbourne's fall-back. Ernie will be looking to bolster his squad for the Asian Champions League and the player/s he attracts will decide whether Melbourne Victory make a late surge for the Minor Premiership Trophy.

Jets Under the Radar

July 22nd 2009 12:04
Wowie wow wah! Down to two weeks and two days . . . also equal to sixteen days. The clock is ticking and there are some big surprises afoot in the fifth edition of the Hyundai A - League. Oogh I can't wait.

Today I'm going to give you the run down on the Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory preparations for 2009/2010. The Jets were champions two seasons ago however, one season later they had a massive fall from grace. They collected last place after several players exited the club in bitter circumstances. As for Perth they were a once mighty club on the Aussie football map but back in 2005/2006 when the A League kicked off things changed. In the semi professional NSL Perth had taken out the last two Grand Finals and had appeared in a total of four of the last five Grand Finals.

The big purple super club have gone mad in the off season. It's Perth Glory who has set the transfer market alight with a spending spree that makes you wonder . . . hmmm how the hell are they getting these guys underneath the salary cap. Perth recruited Derby County's Andy Todd and Socceroo Chris Coyne to stiffen up their defence. This is a department that has let the Glory down in recent years. Surely with these two experienced campaigners onboard we will see the Glory flying high again.

Not happy to merely shore up the defence Glory have added Socceroos Jacob Burns to the midfield and Mile Sterjovski as a partnering striker to cult hero Eugene 'who's you daddy' Dadi. Perth have got some real workers in the midfield in the shape of Sikora and Scott Bulloch. They are going to be hard to knock off anywhere and anytime. Like a lot of people, I'm of the opinion the purple super team are back.

Newcastle Jets, Ljubo Milicevic
Newcastle Jets
The Newcastle Jets are the team that is set to surprise all the experts this year. After falling at every hurdle last season the Jets went on a recruiting drive and picked up some real quality. The likes of roving defender Ljubo Milicevic and Fabio Vignaroli offered Newcastle some new options during their great performance in the Asian Champions League. The Novacastrians poached Sasho Petrovski from neighbours Central Coast and the guy just revelled in the pressure cooker situations.

Petrovski is one of them guys who you don't want to motivate. Don't tell Sasho what he can't do. He'll just come out and do it and present you with the humble pie and a gift card for you to preach unto other foolhardy sledgers of the Sash. When I look through this squad there is a bit of everything. Costanzo and Milicevic the experienced heads at the back with the younger brigade D'Apuzzo, Thompson and Elrich. Brill. Wiley Italian Vignaroli will take the league by storm and I'm sure young Kaz Patafta will benefit off the experienced campaigner. Wheelhouse is no slouch but his size will allow the Jets to boss teams around in the midfield too.

The attack is nothing to slag off either. You got Sasho as a garauntee of eight goals while Rooney will battle it out with Marko Jesic for the other spot up front. Okay so the first choice manager has walked out. Even before that the 'experts' told us the Jets were a $26 bet to win the minor premiership and at the TAB you can get them with a 13 point headstart for a dividend of $8. It's too good to be true. I'm damned confident that new manager Culina is a pretty easy going guy and he will allow the fiery Milicevic to run the show. The only fragile ego which might be affected by this is Sasho, but he is all the way up the other end of the field so we can safely say they won't have too many issues. Put the Jets down as a top four priority folks.

A League A Lottery

July 17th 2009 13:33
Wow!!! What a season in front of us. Season five of the A League, Australia's premier soccer competition is shaping to be something out of this world. Look at the recruits . . . Gold Coast United with Socceroo Jason Culina plus the poaching of Shane Smeltz last season's Golden Boot. Then take a quick squiz at Perth Glory, wowie wow wow! A triple threat of Socceroos headed by regular Mile Sterjovski and backed up by Jacob Burns and super solid centre back Chris Coyne. I can't wait and I bet you can't either.

With kick off less than three weeks away (Aug 6th Melb v CCM) we here at Rightback felt it was time to give you the people a regular update on all the ins and outs of the A League so you aren't left out of the loop when suddenly all the discussion at the office water cooler is about the A League. So plug in and listen and by August 5th (A League Eve) we'll give you the exact order the ten teams will finish in at season's end.

Today we look closely at Sydney FC and Gold Coast United. Sydney FC have managed to fly beneath the radar of the bulk of A League hyperamas this pre season, that's despite going through nine odd trial matches undefeated. The critics are saying "Oh they're only State League teams that Sydney is beating, blaa blaa blaa." Something has changed at Sydney, you can see and smell it a mile away. They stink of a makeover. New coach Vitezslav Lavicka has got the Sky Blues hungry again. Clean sheets and goals have blotted their trial form and Sydney have got that blend of old and new that great teams wear. Last season all we heard were stories of infighting and discontent with manager John 'Kossie' Kosmina. Nowadays everyone at Sydney is out to impress the new boss.

Big things are expected from youngsters Ryan Grant and Kofi Danning. Danning quickly asserted himself as the crowd favourite scoring with a toe poke and making some memorable runs down the left. Grant is the workaholic who can cross a ball and the icing on the cake . . . yeah he's got speed too. Blend these two with Corica an in form Aloisi and Brosque playing anywhere but striker/forward and Sydney will be a major contender.

Gold Coast United are an interesting lot. They don't like to keep anything secret. Billionaire owner Clive Palmer quietly predicting the 'sunny boys' will go through the season undefeated. I'm sure players and management took a deep swallow when hearing the money man's expectations. And on top of that Gold Coast's opponent will be champing at the bit to be the team to burn the house down. But when you pause and take a glance at the roster . . . wow! Are you kiddding. Yeah kiddding with the triple.

Miron Bleiberg, Jason Culina, A League
The Sunny Boys
Wearing an almost identical strip to that of the Brazilian national team you are gonna notice this lot. Current Socceroo Culina will call the shots from midfield and with the blessing of manager Miron go go go forward. Not that he'll need to with the likes of Golden Boot Shane Smeltz up front. Smeltz will be working with former Hartlepool boy Joel Porter. I remember young Joel when he was at Sydney Olympic, he had a touch of class from day one. Now Joel is back in town hoping to get his name in the head of Aussie manager Pim Verbeek. Then there is Tahj Minniecon who will add plenty of pace to the flank. On top of this manager Miron decided to throw in a bagful of assorted Brazilians. They're an essential ingredient to any premiership prospect.

Wowie wow wow! In all my excitement I forgot to mention that Gold Coast United sport the coolest manager in the A League. Colourful Miron Bleiberg whose imperfect English is what makes him so catwalk model perfect. Wow.You can bet that simply winning won't be enough for Miron. And 'the Clive'. Clive Palmer the billionaire owner with his private jet that he likes to rent out to the team for pre season bonding sessions. It's pretty obvious Gold Coast will be amongst the frontrunners.
